Global citizens. We’re backing initiatives that promote inclusiveness and universal access to information and data. Because knowledge empowers our people to pioneer solutions to major global issues.
Data. In 2015, 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were set by the United Nations General Assembly to make the world a better place. Whilst achieving them by 2030 is a major challenge in itself, tracking our progress towards those goals brings its own set of difficulties, because it requires reliable, accessible and timely data.
Real–time. The information is out there. With digital technology, we now live much of our lives online amidst an entire goldmine of data. From personal details to specialist research, data is everywhere, and it can have a variety of uses. This makes it extremely valuable to some of the world’s biggest organisations. With GDPR, privacy issues and breaches in the headlines, it can sometimes be difficult to appreciate the true power of data. But knowledge in itself, when correctly deployed, can be used for immense good.
In the right hands. Data can be a powerful tool that can drive action, encourage discussion and inspire lasting change. Having free access to the right weather data can help smallholder farmers plan when to harvest. Open access to academic data can lead to new research and innovation. An open entertainment ecosystem can help every citizen on this planet foray into the information highway. Accurate data about the lives of women and girls can aid policy–makers shape decisions based on full information and on-ground realities.
Empowerment. For all. We aim to bring more ‘power to people’ by supporting open initiatives and leveraging a range of expertise, from grass – roots to institutional level. By working together to build a strong data and information ecosystem, we will create the opportunity for everyone to access the knowledge they need to help achieve the SDGs.
